Mediation, Arbitration, & Med-Arb
How Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Works
How Mediation Works
Separating spouses or businesses with a legal dispute hire a mediator (a lawyer trained in specific mediation techniques), to help them reach an amicable solution, one that is acceptable to both sides.
How Arbitration Works
Separating spouses or disputing parties hire an arbitrator (typically a lawyer) who assumes the role of a judge. The arbitrator’s decision is final and the disputing parties agree to live with the decision.
How Med-Arb Works
Separating couples or disputing parties start off with mediation. They proceed to arbitration if mediation is unsuccessful. With Med-Arb, the parties sign a binding agreement to live with an arbitrator’s decision.
Mediation Arbitration Peel is a group of experienced lawyer-mediators dedicated to help separating spouses and common-law couples in Peel Region, Ontario (Brampton, Bramalea, Mississauga, Streetsville, Cooksville, Lorne Park, Clarkson, Port Credit), to resolve their disputes faster, cheaper, and more confidentially than going to court or going to trial.
Each of our lawyers has helped hundreds of couples end their relationships amicably using mediation, arbitration or mediation-arbitration (Med-Arb), collectively known as Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
In business, mediation is the standard way to resolve disputes; about 95% of all business disputes are resolved this way, including person injury claims.
Mediation is less well known as an efficient, timely, and thrifty way to reach an acceptable agreement for separation and divorce. We want to change that.
Importantly, mediation is the only dispute resolution process that preserves relationships. Post-separation, a good working relationship with your ex is paramount to the well-being and emotional health of your children.
Food For Thought

Family Mediation Services
We spent so much money trying to get a separation agreement. Then we tried mediation. Our mediator guided us through issues important to us. We stopped attacking each other and focused on our children. I wish we had used mediation a long time ago.
Arbitration was a good thing. It saved us about $80,000 that a family law trial would have cost. I'm not entirely happy with the decision of the arbitrator, but it is in the ballpark. Our children will benefit from the agreement we crafted which is what matters to me.
My husband and I were stuck in a protracted fight. We have a lot of assets, including investment properties. But the legal bills were adding up, too. After mediation, were were able to craft a reasonable separation agreement and keep the money for our own kids.
